The Design Brief

Planting for parterre style symmetrical garden that had already been created by the client. The client was open minded on the planting style but wanted mainly perennials but with some winter interest. The planting space was very large with Yew and Box hedging surrounding and grass plants leading to circular viewing points. Rabbits and deer visiting the garden were going to be major issue.

The Solution

Prairie style planting was chosen given the large space, and location of the parterre being close to open waving fields of often barley and rape seed. Many grasses and tall perennials such as Verbena bonariensis and Thalictrum sp. were chosen. Along with perennials providing winter interest such Alchemilla mollis and Heuchera with the shorter Miscanthus grasses. Plants preferring partial shade were chosen to be closer to the Yew hedge as this would eventually reach a height of 1-1.5m.
